Recently, the biggest CA country – Kazakhstan – spurs a growing interest in the media due to its rapid development and the emerging role as the key player in Central Asia economy, politics and culture. The aim of this paper is to analyse how the capital of Kazakhstan (and the country per se), is represented in online news coverage in a selection of newspapers published in Kyrgyztan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The theoretical and methodological framework of the investigation hinges on the assumptions of the Framing Theory used in media studies on the one hand, and follows a corpus-assisted discourse analysis widely used in linguistic inquiries on the other. The data come from a monitor JSJ corpus, from which virtual corpora illustrating the news published by the above-mentioned countries were teased out. The corpus-based tools used in the quantitative study involve: the analysis of collocations, keywords and frequencies, as well as sentiment analysis. The examination of framing illustrates a qualitative investigation. The results of the study demonstrate that Kazakhstan is represented in online CA news coverage in highly positive terms, as a powerful leader of the whole Central Asia region (in terms of economy, politics and culture).

Anna Bączkowska , Shynar Gabdrakhmanova , Gulnara Akhmetova Prawa autorskie (c) 2020 https://studialinguistica.up.krakow.pl/article/view/7594 Fri, 11 Dec 2020 00:00:00 +0000 KRAKÓW w derywacji onomastycznej https://studialinguistica.up.krakow.pl/article/view/7613
The subject of the paper are derivatives of the name Kraków in toponymy and anthroponymy of Polish and some other languages. The material was gathered from the work of W. Barczewski, Kiermasy in Warmia. Names in Warmian families were passed down from generation to generation and given in accordance with family tradition.

The selection of names was scarce. First names were rare in common circulation, more often short names and deminutive-hypocoristic forms created with a small number of formants were used. The number of diminutive or playful female names was limited. These were created by name derivatives: Luca, Jewka, Lucka, Nulka, Baśka, Basia, Barwuchna, Dośka, Waleśka, Elzka, Joanka, Finka, Katrynka, Kaśka, Marychna, and Staśka. Of the male names, Barczewski certified ten names in basic forms: Jakub, Andrzej, Stefan, Klement, Michał, Maciej, Marcin, Joachim, Wojciech, Kazimierz and derivative hypocorrisms and deminutive forms: Janek, Michałek, Maciek, Kuba, Kubal, Kubalek, Kaźnirek, Wojtek, Jędrysek, Józefek, Wiktorek, Frąck, Matys. They are represented by 26 chats from the Opoczno area and Opoczno proverbs. For the purpose of this article, I have extracted dialect vocabulary – 61 words from chats – and compared them with dictionary materials from other sources of Polish dialect lexicography: a collection of K. The mass settlement of Germans in the cities caused the German loans to become more and more numerous and took root unnoticed in the language. The Germanisms presented here show a different degree of dependence on their originals, usually making it difficult, and sometimes impossible, to indicate their sources, which was related to the fact that quite often the source of Polish borrowings were German bustling, environ mental or colloquial expressions.
Anna Kostecka-Sadowa Prawa autorskie (c) 0 https://studialinguistica.up.krakow.pl/article/view/7628 Fri, 11 Dec 2020 00:00:00 +0000 Topograficzno-historyczna geneza nazw własnych krakowskich mostów i innych budowli służących przeprawie https://studialinguistica.up.krakow.pl/article/view/7629
The following paper is dedicated to the analysis of 41 proper names (including 18 historical names) of structures in Cracow used for crossing water and terrain, identified architecturally as bridges, footbridges, trestle bridges and flyovers. These names have got a rather distinct structure: the anteposition contains a generic name, while the postposition comprises an individualising determinant, such as an adjective or a noun in genitive case, less frequently nominative: most Dębnicki (bridge), most Wandy (bridge), most Lajkonik (bridge); kładka Ojca Bernatka (footbridge), estakada Obrońców Lwowa (trestle bridge). Most of these terms have toponymic or anthroponymic motivation connected with Cracow, others belong to exceptions. There is a tendency for using commemorative names, introduced with the preposition imienia/im. (named after): most im. Kardynała Franciszka Macharskiego. Due to the fact that these structures are located in the city, their names belong to urbanonymy. The physical appearance and function of these facilities make it possible to apply in their names the notion of hodonymy. In the Russian language the term gefironim has been used in reference to these names. In terms of the type of denoted structures, the notion gefironim is narrower than an urbanonym, but it is wider when it comes to the area in which these structures are located.
The article discusses a selected group of metatextual comments made in the 3rd edition of Marcin Bielski’s Kronika published in 1564. The focus is on the topic of auspicious economic entity names and especially their constituents – lexical units that are supposed to make the name and entity stand out in the market, yet should not be misleading as to what the company’s scope of activity is. The names of firms and premises with the mythological firmonym Hades from various sectors (147 items) from all over Poland, sourced from Panorama Firm, a large business directory, were examined. Quantitatively, the collated material shows that most marketing chrematonyms with this component can be found in the funeral sector, as accounted for by the funeral and thanatological connotations the mythological lexeme evokes by way of its cultural meaning. Much more seldom, name coiners from various sectors (incl. textile, hotel, building, transport, automobile companies) employ the word as well, rendering firmonym-using identification possibly difficult, misleading or nigh on impossible.
Magdalena Puda-Blokesz Prawa autorskie (c) 0 https://studialinguistica.up.krakow.pl/article/view/7634 Fri, 11 Dec 2020 00:00:00 +0000 Szkolnictwo protestanckie i jego wpływ na polszczyznę cieszyńską przełomu XVIII i XIX wieku https://studialinguistica.up.krakow.pl/article/view/7638
The article presents the part of the research material based on Silesian language from the Cieszyn area. The observations were made on the example of the work Acrostichis własnego wyobrażenia Kniaża Wielkiego Moskiewskiego by Walenty Neothebel. One can indicate a few determinants of picturesqueness, they are: discontinuous words structures, proverbs and idioms, comparisons, enumerations and large and extensive description contexts. In general distinguished devices are not imaginative or exquisite, frequently being allied to simple, even colloquial language. In that the analyzed text is clearly vivid and evocative. The applied devices serve pragmatic effectiveness of the work, wich is its most important component. In the analyzed piece of work one can distinguish the features of more than one literary genre, e.g. pamphlet, morality play or dialogue, but the pragmatic aspect leads primarily to critical texts of political subject which are close right to the pamphlet. Furthermore, one can mark that Walenty Neothebel due to negative picture of tsar Ivan the Terrible presented in Acrostichis preserved the negative stereotype of Russians in Polish language and culture.
Artur Rejter Prawa autorskie (c) 0 https://studialinguistica.up.krakow.pl/article/view/7639 Fri, 11 Dec 2020 00:00:00 +0000 Czy Bamberka jest poznanianką? Because the dominant role in Lublin’s religious life is played by the Catholic Church, the most numerous group are the names relating to Catholicism – but not exclusively: other Christian denominations (including Eastern ones) are also represented. Churches as spatial objects belong to the city’s cultural landscape, its sacral landscape and sacred space. It is a sanctity that emerges thanks to shared meanings, communicated by means of an urban and architectural code, as well as in connection with linguistic forms qua messages concerning a given object and place. Forms of this kind are invocations of patron saints associated with places of religious cult. They have a discursive marking that results from being anchored in religious discourse; however, they can also function as elements that organize the communal life of the discourse of social memory. This article deals with Catholic patron saints. The data have been classified semantically but also with respect to the form of the names and their cultural motivation. We try to present a concept of the lexical ecosystem in which clusters of words are used with reference to people but also to plants and animals. The core of this system is constituted by words connected with life conceived of as zoe – biological duration of living organisms involving the processes of birth, maturation, aging, and dying. Clusters of words of this ecosystem address fundamental activities of living organisms such as breathing, digesting, moving, articulating sounds as well as inner and outer features of man. Hence, the essay suggests that the concept of the lexical ecosystem necessitates a new pedagogical approach towards the question of metaphor and metaphorical nature of language.
Ewa Sławkowa Prawa autorskie (c) 0 https://studialinguistica.up.krakow.pl/article/view/7644 Fri, 11 Dec 2020 00:00:00 +0000 Funkcjonalność gier językowych w prasie drugiego obiegu wydawniczego końca lat 70. https://studialinguistica.up.krakow.pl/article/view/7105
The article presents the functionality of language games in texts representing the unofficial press discourse of the late ‘70s (press). The non-censorship journalism of the second publishing circulation, published outside the censorship, created a space for independent debate and presented the point of view of the pre-solidarity opposition; therefore, it developed communication practices that were alternative to Newspapers as the basic model of Polish in the press at the time (and in public communication). Language games (lexical, syntactic, text, and intertextual) strengthened the persuasive influence of the second cycle press texts, in which new topics were introduced and a new community of values was defined. In a broader sense, the presence of language games in independent journalism can be treated as a signal of reproduction of public communication after a period of dominant newspeak – excluding and actually anti-communication.
Dorota Suska Prawa autorskie (c) 2020 ANNALES UNIVERSITATIS PAEDAGOGICAE CRACOVIENSIS. The author has described the works that have been written on this topic based on the materials from magazines, belles-lettres and books discussing the titles of films. Twelve titles were presented which have been taken over by the authors of at least two new texts. The research material included ten Polish novels from the years 1969–2013. Twelve titles come from two poetic works, one song, five novels and two filmed stories, one light opera and one film. Six of them are the works of Polish authors, and the remaining six were made by foreign authors. A half of them were described in the volume Skrzydlate słowa [Winged Words] of 1990.
Anna Tyrpa Prawa autorskie (c) 0 https://studialinguistica.up.krakow.pl/article/view/7648 Fri, 11 Dec 2020 00:00:00 +0000 Humorous and Non-Humorous Effects in Sitcoms: a Relevance-Theoretic Perspective https://studialinguistica.up.krakow.pl/article/view/7649
Humorous utterances can be divided into those which are created for their own sake (that is, to amuse others), dubbed autotelic humour, and those which communicate truthful and/or untruthful meanings germane to the ongoing conversation, dubbed speaker-meaning-telic humour (Dynel 2018). The present paper carries out a qualitative analysis of humorous units in sitcom discourse with a view to delineating a number of propositional meanings, which can be potentially derived by the TV recipients. Special attention is confined to one of the most powerful tools used to explain humour in various humorous manifestations, i.e. weak implicatures (Sperber and Wilson 1986 [1995]; Wilson and Sperber 2004). It is believed here that pragmatic COMPREHENSION mechanisms proposed within Relevance Theory and the notion of weakly communicated assumptions are two sides of the same coin since these account not only for the viewer’s recovery of a humorous interpretation but also of an array of non-humorous propositional meanings. Moreover, the participatory framework has been employed as an additional parameter to show the difference in the reception of a dialogue by fictional characters and the viewers.
Magdalena Wieczorek Prawa autorskie (c) 0 https://studialinguistica.up.krakow.pl/article/view/7649 Fri, 11 Dec 2020 00:00:00 +0000 Językowo-kulturowy obraz ziemi bocheńskiej utrwalony w mikrotoponimii gminy Żegocina https://studialinguistica.up.krakow.pl/article/view/7650
The subject of the article is the reconstruction of the image of the Bochnia land based on the analysis of toponyms collected in the commune of Żegocina.
